What is Augmented Reality / Mixed Reality

What is Augmented Reality?

With the constant flow of new tech, you can be forgiven for sometimes feeling your head spin. It is sometimes simply difficult to keep up. In the area of digital media, augmented reality is a new and hot area of development. It provides huge possibilities for what you can do with video. It promises to be a tech that can help you construct a truly unforgettable and engaging experience for your viewers. So, what actually is Augmented Reality(AR)  and how can it change your viewing experience?

So, What is it Exactly?

Well let’s begin with a true definition. AR is “an enhanced version of reality. Where live direct or indirect views of physical real-world environments are augmented with added computer-generated images. This happens over a user’s view of the real-world, thus enhancing one’s current idea of reality.”

That is, when you watch a video and a piece of kit places digital elements onto the video. As an example, say you are viewing a film of an empty road. Someone builds a digital element that places lots of different cars on to that empty space. So from a simple basic video of an empty road, the AR, has created a completely new experience for the viewer.

VR v. AR

Many people are aware of the capabilities of building a fully digital environment that acts as a total VR. For instance, you place on your headset and walk around this totally constructed world. The difference with AR is that is uses the natural world (your video) and simply overlays virtual information on top of it.

The bonus of AR over VR is that there is familiarity of the natural environment, that is enhanced using the extra element. It gives you a great flexibility in what you can construct within your own video.

The Benefits To Your Video Experience

The major bonus of being able to use AR with your wedding video  is that guests or friends who couldn’t make it will be able to interact with the experience. Therefore, after creating your film, you will be able to add extra elements on to the video that were not there previously on the day.

You can can add any number of extra bits of info. Perhaps you add info about the dress, the guests, or the venue where it is being held?
